On a recent family escapade to Madeira, I found myself strolling down the bustling main street of Funchal, stumbling upon the iconic Baden Powell statue. As it turns out, Baden Powell, the founder of the global scouting movement, had quite the wanderlust, embarking on a world tour that led him to numerous countries, including Cuba, Jamaica, and even Madeira. In 1947, a local artist by the name of Ricardo Abrantes Velosa from Madeira was commissioned to create a bust of Baden Powell, commemorating his visit to the island.

Just a stone’s throw away from the Baden Powell statue, I discovered Rua Baden Powell – the Road of Baden Powell – a testament to his lasting impact.

This discovery of the Baden Powell Rad in Funchal got me pondering: How many roads in the UK are connected to Scouting? My curiosity piqued, I decided to embark on a digital scouting adventure right from my holiday spot. Just a stone’s throw away from the Baden Powell statue, I discovered Rua Baden Powell – the Road of Baden Powell – a testament to his lasting impact.

My quest continued back in the UK, where I unearthed three Baden Powell Roads. There’s one in Hackney, another in Paul, and yet another in Chesterfield – a trio of roads honouring the scouting legacy. But I wasn’t done yet. Expanding my search to include scout-related street names led me to some fascinating discoveries.

In the UK, there are three Scout Lanes, each in Leeds, Bradford, and Bristol. A Scout Hill graces Jules Bury, West Yorkshire, while Scout Road winds through Bolton. Scout-related creativity shines with names like Scouting Way in Carlisle and Brownsea Drive in Poole, situated conveniently opposite Brownsea Island – the very birthplace of scouting.

Curiosity drove me further into modern scouting nomenclature. The hunt for section-specific street names was on. A Beaver Close emerged in Exeter, followed by Cubit Way in Swindon and Cub Lead Close in Coventry. Explorer Road in Harlow, Essex brought a contemporary touch to the mix. Not to forget, Gilwell Close in Bexley, Greater London.

The journey didn’t stop there. Jamboree Road in Cheshire, Camp Lane in Leicester, and Camp Road in Farnborough joined the scouting-themed street ensemble. Adventure Road in Southend. Yet, I wondered if there were more hidden gems.
