Being a Scout leader is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done… but lately, it’s also felt heavier than ever. This isn’t a rant. It’s a conversation.
After a recent district meeting, I logged off feeling drained — and I know I’m not the only one.
-Compliance expectations.
-Training piling up.
-Welcome meetings waiting.
-Rising costs.
-Leaders stretched between family, work, and volunteering.
None of this is about people not caring. It’s about good volunteers trying to keep up with growing demands across The Scout Association while still showing up for young people every week.
In this vlog, I’m being honest about the pressure many Group Leads and section leaders are feeling right now — and how it’s starting to chip away at the joy that brought us into Scouting in the first place.
If you’ve felt the weight lately… you’re not alone. 👇 I’d really value hearing from other UK leaders: What’s feeling hardest right now — admin, compliance, recruitment, finances, or something else?

I totally agree the role of GLV has started to feel like an unpaid admin job rather than an inspiring leadership role. I know my group could really grow but I feel bogged down in the compliance and I just want to go back to inspiring projects and events
Being nicer to new volunteers transformed into compliance, with training, sorry I mean learning, with TSA expecting everyone would look after their own training. As if that was ever going to happen. As a GLV. if I didn’t chase, sorry I mean support, both new volunteers or people with expiring learning or DBS’s even more suspensions would be occurring and that’s before the computer starts doing auto suspensions. I could go on but you get the gist!
