Ah, the Gilwell Reunion Blues, that bittersweet feeling that washes over you after returning from an unforgettable weekend of scouting adventures. As fellow scout leaders, we understand this sentiment all too well. Just a handful of days ago, I had the privilege of being with Bushscout in our Skills Village, where we shared essential first aid skills, crafted our own first aid props, and explored a myriad of other invaluable Practical Skills. It was an experience filled with camaraderie, learning, and a deep sense of purpose that Scouting brings into our lives.

Our Skills Village was a hub of knowledge and practicality, offering unique Skill Bases for Leaders to explore, Learn and then pass on the skills to their Sections when they return back to their Groups:

  1. Campfire Cooking: The tantalizing aroma of food sizzling over an open flame, the joy of sharing meals with fellow Leaders and Young People around the campfire—these are the moments that remind us of the simple pleasures of outdoor living.
  2. Tarpology: The art of shelter-building is an essential skill for any scout. Learning to fashion a sturdy and weather-resistant shelter from basic materials is a skill that can truly make a difference when out in the wild.
  3. Woggle Making: Crafting woggles, it’s a combination of creativity and practicality. It’s a skill that carries a piece of scouting tradition with it.
  4. Fire Lighting: Fire is not just a source of warmth but a symbol of resilience and resourcefulness. Learning various fire-lighting techniques ensures that scouts can conquer the elements and stay warm even in challenging conditions.
  5. Nordic Swing Braiding: Weaving the intricate patterns of Nordic swing braiding is an art form that connects us to our scouting heritage. It’s a reminder of the rich traditions that bind us together.
  6. Tracking: The ability to read the signs of nature and follow tracks is a skill that connects scouts to the wilderness in a profound way. It’s about understanding the language of the land.
  7. Trauma Tower (Team Building): Team building is at the core of scouting, and the Trauma Tower challenges scouts to work together, solve problems, and build trust. It’s an invaluable experience that extends beyond the campfire.

These bases, among others, formed the heart of our Skills Village, each offering a unique set of challenges and rewards. But now, as I wake up to the blaring sound of a 5 am alarm clock and prepare for the early morning commute on the Elizabeth Line to Central London for work at the hospital, I can’t help but yearn for the simpler, more fulfilling moments I experienced at Gilwell Reunion.

I’d much rather begin my day by the warmth of a campfire, watching the sun rise, and brewing a comforting cup of tea in my trusty campfire kettle than hastily grabbing a coffee from a chain like Costa. There’s something truly special about those moments of tranquility and connection with nature that scouting provides. The soft crackling of the campfire, the scent of the outdoors, and the soothing ritual of preparing that morning brew—it’s a form of therapy for the soul.

Beyond the campfire, it’s the shared experiences and bonds formed during scouting events like Gilwell Reunion that we long for. The laughter of fellow scouts, the impromptu storytelling sessions, and the feeling of belonging to a close-knit community—it’s these intangible moments that make scouting more than just a hobby; it’s a way of life.

So, here’s the question for all of you fellow Scout Leaders: What do you miss the most about your weekend at Gilwell Reunion? Is it the crackling campfire that warmed your heart and hands? Is it the hearty laughter of your scouting family? Or is it the undeniable sense of community that can only be found in the great outdoors?

While we may return to our everyday lives, these memories remain etched in our hearts. They remind us of the incredible experiences that await us in the world of scouting, and they fuel our passion for nurturing the next generation of scouts.
