Hello everyone, BigManInTheWoods here!

Well, after my first “Confessions of a Scout Leader” post, my inbox practically exploded! It seems many of you had your own “behind the woggle” moments you were itching to share. And let me tell you, some of them were pure gold – hilarious, relatable, and a powerful reminder that we’re all navigating this amazing, chaotic world of Scouting together.

I’ve picked out a few anonymous gems (identities protected, of course!) that I think will resonate with leaders everywhere. So grab a brew, make sure your DC isn’t looking over your shoulder, and enjoy this fresh batch of Scout Leader confessions, straight from your fellow volunteers!

“Dear Big Man In The Woods,”

“Okay, here’s one for your collection. I confess: I once told my Squirrel Drey that the ‘mysterious rustling’ in the woods during our night hike was the legendary ‘Woodland Womble of Whispering Pines’ searching for lost socks. The truth? It was actually one of our Young Leaders, bless his cotton socks, whom I’d dared to sneak ahead and shake some bushes for ‘atmospheric effect.’ Their wide-eyed excitement (and sudden silence as they clung to my legs) was totally worth the tiny white lie and the Snickers bar I owed the YL later. They still talk about the ‘Womble.’ My Squirrel Leader points probably took a hit in the honesty department, but campcraft engagement – and inter-leader bonding – went through the roof!”
A Slightly Mischievous (and Persuasive) Squirrel Leader

“Big Man in The Woods, you won’t believe this one (or maybe you will)…”

“I confess to having a secret ‘Scout Gear’ savings account that my other half doesn’t quite know the full extent of. Every time there’s a sale at Go Outdoors, a little ’emergency fund transfer’ happens. My justification? ‘It’s an investment in the young people’s future experiences!’ My ever-growing collection of slightly different-sized dry bags and innovative tent pegs tells a different story. She thinks I’m just ‘really good at finding bargains in the local Charity Shop for the Group’…”
Financially Creative Scouter

“Mark,”

“My confession involves inter-Leader politics. We have one Beaver Leader who is, let’s say, exceptionally particular about biscuit allocation. I once ‘accidentally’ sent an email, meant for my long-suffering Assistant, detailing a rather elaborate plan to ensure our Scout Troop got first dibs on the chocolate digestives at the Group camp (it involved a diversionary tactic with a ‘lost’ football). Of course, it went straight to said Grumpy Beaver Leader. The frostiness at the next Leaders’ meeting could have flash-frozen a mammoth. Oops.”
Strategist (and Accidental Emailer) of the Biscuit Wars

“Hey Mark,”

“Confession time: My car boot is less ‘family vehicle’ and more ‘mobile quartermaster store of questionable organisation.’ There are at least three types of rope, a half-eaten pack of Kendal Mint Cake from 2022, a single welly (whose partner is MIA), countless tent pegs of unknown origin, and enough first-aid supplies to equip a small field hospital. My family just sighs and shoves it all to one side when they need to put the weekly food shop in. I call it ‘preparedness’; they call it ‘a Bio Hazard.'”
The Four-Wheeled Q-Store Owner

“Dear Big Man In The Woods,”

“This one still makes me cringe. We were doing a simple craft activity with the Beavers – making paper plate animals. I was demonstrating how to cut out the ears for a rabbit, got a bit carried away with my ‘expert’ technique, and completely mangled the plate. Without missing a beat, I turned to little “Timmy” Beaver next to me, who was actually doing a pretty decent job, and said, ‘Oh Timmy, look! You’ve made your rabbit’s ears a bit… unique! Let’s see if we can fix that, shall we?’ and proceeded to ‘correct’ his perfectly fine plate to match my disaster. The other Leaders gave me the look. I felt terrible afterwards, but in the moment? Pure panic and deflection.”
The Blame-Shifting Bunny Butcher

“Mark, this is a tough one to admit…”

“We’d organised a brilliant visit to the local fire station for the Explorers. So excited. I was in charge of putting all the details onto OSM, including the drop-off time. Fast forward to the day, and we arrive to find the station all locked up, fire crew nowhere to be seen. Parents are waiting, Explorers are muttering. Panic stations! I immediately got on the phone, full of righteous indignation, claiming the Fireman on duty had definitely given us the wrong time. Turns out, after much back and forth and a very confused Fire Chief, I checked OSM again. I’d put the drop-off time an hour later than agreed. The fireman was right all along. I subtly blamed a ‘glitch in the system’ to the parents and never quite corrected the narrative with the Explorers. The shame still burns hotter than any training fire.”
The OSM Offender (and Fireman Framer)

“Big Man In The Woods, this one’s for you…”

“I confess that after a particularly challenging camp where it rained non-stop and three Scouts discovered a shared passion for competitive snoring, I ‘accidentally’ booked myself a spa day the following weekend and told my family it was a ‘vital de-briefing and stress management course essential for continued effective leadership.’ They didn’t question the fluffy robe and cucumber eye-patches in my post-course photos.”
Master of Self-Care (and Creative Excuses)

“Hi Mark,”

“I once convinced my Scouts that the slightly burnt bits on the campfire sausages were ‘authentic char-grill flavouring’ and a sign of a ‘true outdoorsman’s cooking.’ In reality, I’d got distracted telling a ghost story and nearly set the whole lot on fire. They bought it. I think. Anyway, no one complained, and I learned to delegate sausage-turning.”

Keep Those Confessions Coming!

Honestly, reading through your emails has been a highlight. It’s a brilliant reminder that behind every badge, every necker, and every well-run (or slightly chaotic) activity, there’s a human being doing their absolute best, learning as they go, and having a few laughs (and minor mishaps) along the way.

These shared experiences are what make the Scouting community so special. Got a confession you’re ready to share anonymously with the BigManInTheWoods community? Drop me an email, or if you’re feeling brave, pop it in the comments below!

Until next time, keep being your wonderfully imperfect, dedicated selves!

Stay adventurous (and don’t get caught!),
