I was asked about 3 weeks ago by a Scout Leader in the UK this Question..
“Is it better to have a camp with a full program of ‘fancy’ activities or a camp with some activities, (mainly traditional Scouting activities) and a good amount of free time to enable the Young People to develop the ability of ‘creating their own fun’?
It seems nowadays kids favourite words are ‘I’m bored’ and they expect adults to constantly provide entertainment.”
Here’s how I replied back to that question

Just got back from a leadership sleepover. My 10 older scouts and youn leader. (It was my first night away post getting my permit) They basically ran the program last night and we did team challenges and looked at different personalitie types and different leadership styles today. Yet still even with a night of chilling, where they chose to play football, hide and seek, and some zombie game, as well as just sitting round a fire hanging out I still got asked today a number of times by one scout, who I know dose so much outside of scouts and school. ‘can we just chat or ply football after this’ he needed some down time. I’m leading the 1st troop only week long summer camp this summer and I plan lots of down time.
