Tell us a little about who you are, what you do and your family
I am Martin Dorey, campervanner, surfer, writer. I have written 3 books about camper vans, cooking and outdoorsyness. My latest, The Camper Van Bible, came out last year. I am currently working on 2 new books about slow journeys. I am separated with two amazing girls, Maggie, 14 and Charlie, 13 and live in Bude in Cornwall.
Are you a Camper or glamper?
Camper, no doubt about that.
Whats your favourite piece of camping gear?
Camper van. Fully loaded with boards, wetsuits, bikes, kids, friends, sharp knives and a few ingredients, it’s all I need. But it’s not about being all twee and putting out the bunting. I like wild camping, going places others don’t and exploring new things.
What’s your most embarrassing camping memory?
Pulling the tap off the water pipe at the site at Aberdaron a few years ago. My kids posted the video to the internet. The site went without water for the rest of the day.
What is your most treasured camping moment?
Waking up anywhere special. I try to appreciate every moment when camping. Last weekend I camped at a Caravan and Motorhome Club rally as well as at an alternative festival. Both great ways to see the dawn. Sitting having breakfast and laughing about the fun we had the night before is a great – and treasured – way to start the day.
What advice would you give to new first time campers ?
Do some prep and research. Don’t over pack. Be prepared to rough it a bit and don’t be disappointed if it isn’t idyllic in the way you might hope. The chances are that it’ll be idyllic when you look back at it later – you just learn to appreciate different things. It’s people that matter.
Any tips or tricks for kids who are going camping for the 1st time?
Get them to take an interest in what they are doing… cook food they can help with. Trust them to be safe and sensible. Let them enjoy their freedom. Hide the devices.
What’s the 1 thing you always take with you when you go camping?
My trusty, long serving Swiss Army knife. There are few disasters it can’t fix (apart from taps falling off pipes).
