On a recent visit to my Beaver Colony. One of the Blue Ninja’s asked me “do I like being a Scout Leader ?” I said yes it’s great fun and enjoyable! She then asked “what do you do as a Scout Leader ?”
My Management mindset kicked in and I started thinking what do we do as Leader’s, what’s in our Role description?

I thought about this question and got some opinion,
“Mentor” very true, our young people look up to us as Leader’s and want us to guide them, sometimes giving them life experience or advice.
“Being the cook” one of my lesser skills at camp.
“A fortune Teller” why didn’t you know that little Johnny is allergenic to XYZ..
“Paramedic ” from dispensing Plasters to home sickness tablets.
“An entertainer” Yes all encompassing this one, A Scout Leader can be a clown, a singer, pirate or even a magician to name a few.
“Magician” what’s your magic skills like? we’ve all been there at camp, when 1 of the scouts comes up and says that they haven’t packed the tent poles for example and expect you to pull it out of thin air.
“ Chief Negotiator” another role in which you deal with several irrational strong minded individuals.
“Counsellor” on many occasions I’ve noticed that a Scout just isn’t themselves over the past few weeks, I’ve chatted to them to see if everything is OK with them and that’s when they break down and tell you how they are struggling at school and want some life experience advice.
I’m not sure what the salary is but there’s a great benefits package including,
-It’s only 2 hours a week plus some overtime.
-Endless questions, you’re always learning.
-Kids movies, you can now watch guilt free.
-The sampling tax when you open sweets or other treats. (Everyone does this, don’t they?)
-Endless supply of laughter & fun.
And by the way the little terrors are not unionised ( they don’t need it)
What do you think, what else could be on the lists?
